About The Survivor’s Edit
Stories about the lives we rebuild after everything changes.
Some experiences divide life into before and after.
A diagnosis. A loss. A moment that rearranges the way you understand your body, your future, or yourself.
Often people expect a clean story in the “after.” Treatment. Recovery. Closure.
But survivorship usually does not feel that simple.
The Survivor’s Edit is a place for the quieter terrain that follows life-changing events. A space where identity shifts, where resilience is about endurance, and where meaning is often discovered slowly.
These essays explore survivorship, relationships, identity, and the cultural narratives we inherit about strength and healing. Some pieces are deeply personal. Others step back and examine the language and expectations surrounding recovery and resilience. Others simply pay attention to the ordinary moments that quietly shape a life.
Not everything here is heavy. Some stories carry humor. Some carry gratitude. Some simply hold a moment still.
While cancer was the catalyst for this work, these stories are ultimately about rebuilding a life after any experience that changes you. They’re about what we work through as we navigate this wild world.
If you have ever lived through something that changed you in ways that are difficult to explain, you may find something familiar here. And let’s be honest, who hasn’t?
You may feel at home here if you are someone who:
• has navigated illness, loss, or a major life disruption
• finds yourself rethinking your identity
• appreciates reflective writing that tells the truth about complicated seasons of life
• believes growth is often quiet and nonlinear
• believes laughter belongs even in the hardest seasons
What You’ll Find Here
The Survivor’s Edit publishes personal essays and reflections about survivorship.
We’re all surviving something.
Most weeks include a longer essay. Occasionally, there are shorter notes between posts. Some pieces are personal stories. Others explore the ideas and assumptions that shape our understanding of survival, healing, and identity.
The goal is simple. Thoughtful writing that explores what it means to keep moving forward when the old maps no longer apply.
About Weslea
Weslea O’Connor is the writer behind The Survivor’s Edit.
After being diagnosed with cancer in late 2023 and undergoing chemotherapy and immunotherapy, Weslea began writing about the internal landscape of survivorship and the complicated process of rebuilding identity after crisis.
Outside of her writing, Weslea loves spending time with her husband, Patrick, and their French bulldog, Dolly. Writing has long been a parallel path, and The Survivor’s Edit became a way to explore the experiences that are harder to articulate in conversation.
Her work reflects on survivorship, identity, resilience, and the quieter moments that shape how we move forward after difficult seasons.
